Les Pélécaniformes ont un grand bec, long et robuste, souvent muni d'une membrane dilatable entre les deux branches de la mandibule inférieure.
Cette membrane forme une poche, particulièrement développée chez les Pélicans. La mandibule supérieure porte souvent des sutures apparentes. Les narines sont très petites, sauf chez les Phaétons, et elles n'ont
quelquefois pas d'orifice extérieur.
Le nid des Oiseaux de cet ordre est toujours très sommaire. Les Phaétons pondent même directement sur le sol. Les neufs blancs, au nombre de 1 à 6, sont couvés par les deux conjoints pendant 3 à 7 semaines. Les petits, qui sont nidicoles, éclosent aveugles et généralement nus. Ils mettent 5 à 8 semaines à apprendre à voler, durant lesquelles leurs parents les nourrissent par régurgitation.
Les Pélécaniformes se nourrissent essentiellement de Poissons et vivent toujours sur l'eau, ou à proximité immédiate de l'eau. On les rencontre dans toutes les régions tropicales et tempérées du globe.
Leur ordre est très ancien : leur plus vieil ancêtre connu, l'Éloptérix, qui ressemblait à un Cormoran, vivait il y a 100 millions d'années.
